Before every factory machine had its own electric motor, one steam engine could power an entire workshop. The secret was line shafting: long rotating shafts running through the building, distributing power through pulleys, leather belts, countershafts, and ingenious fast-and-loose pulley systems. A machinist could stop his own lathe while the belt overhead kept moving—and every other machine in the factory kept working. This documentary explains how steam-powered factory line shafts worked, how workers changed machine speeds with cone pulleys and back gearing, why leather belts constantly demanded maintenance, and how the same shared power system created dangerous hazards around moving shafts and pulleys. Then electricity changed everything—not immediately by removing the belts, but by gradually moving the source of power closer to each individual machine. #IndustrialHistory #SteamPower #FactoryHistory #MechanicalEngineering #WorkersHistory
