A collection is not a business model. Every independent fashion designer needs a business plan—not as a ceremonial document written for a lender and forgotten, but as a working tool for making decisions. In this episode of The Independent Fashion Designer’s Survival Guide, L.A. Rag Maker explains how a business plan helps define the customer, product, pricing, production strategy, sales channels, inventory commitment and financial requirements behind an independent label. A useful plan also establishes boundaries. It helps a designer determine whether a new product, collaboration or production commitment supports the business—or simply looks exciting in the moment. During an economic downturn, the plan becomes even more important. What happens if sales fall below projections? What if production costs increase? What if a retailer reduces an order or pays later than expected? What can be adjusted without weakening the core product? A business plan cannot guarantee success. But it can reveal expensive weaknesses before they become production commitments. As I’ve learned in my own business, the plan helps keep you on the straight and narrow. It gives you something concrete to measure decisions against—even when the market changes. L.A. Rag Maker is also developing a basic business-plan template created specifically for independent fashion designers. More information will be shared as that resource takes shape.
