Hello everyone and welcome to a new video! Today we are tackling a couture-inspired project. I'm using silk satin and silk organza to make a 1950s formal evening dress to wear to a friend's wedding, using a vintage pattern: Vogue 1343 from 1956, designed by Jacques Heim. For this, I used 5 meters of red silk satin, 5 meters of cream silk organza (interlining), 3.5 meters of silver silk organza (underdress), and 3.5 meters of cream silk haboutai (underdress lining). I didn't even really mention lining the underdress in the video as it's not required, but my silk organza could be a little prickly when pinked, so I ended up lining with some spare haboutai I had in my stash, which also added a little body to the underdress. I also boned the underbodice, which was not needed in the pattern, but I couldn't help myself. The dress is finished with a size zipper, and I also added a cheeky pocket because I CAN. I often embark in projects with a 'we'll figure it out' approach, even though I do typically plan things out quite meticulously. If there's a particular aspect that my brain doesn't want to to deal with, it's just blocked, and I will figure it out later. I ended up taking this project in stages: first, the underdress bodice, then the underdress skirt, then the outer bodice, and finally the outer skirt - but I failed to look at it as a whole. If I had, I could have probably spotted the issues with my 'slap-dash' sizing method and how this wouldn't work for the skirt design. But alas! In the end, I persevered, the dress was wearable, and it looked nice enough. -- RESOURCES -- Couture Sewing Techniques by Claire B.
