Are Madame Grès and Mary McFadden really similar designers simply because both became famous for pleats? Madame Grès transformed fabric through sculptural draping, creating some of the most distinctive silhouettes in twentieth-century haute couture. Decades later, American designer Mary McFadden developed her own celebrated pleated garments — visually related, yet based on a very different approach to fabric, movement, and the female body. This fashion history essay compares Madame Grès and Mary McFadden through their pleating techniques, garment construction, and design philosophies. From French haute couture and sculptural draping to McFadden’s innovative American fashion, we look closely at how two designers used pleats to produce completely different effects — and why garments that appear similar at first can reveal very different ideas about beauty, movement, and the body. Through archival fashion and original garments, we explore the history and construction of pleated fashion and what these two designers can teach us about how clothing changes the way we see the human figure. 00:00 Madame Grès & Mary McFadden: Pleated Fashion 00:25 Madame Grès: French Haute Couture Designer 01:05 Madame Grès: Draping & Pleating Techniques 02:10 Mary McFadden: American Fashion Designer 03:37 Christian Dior & American Fashion 04:10 Pleating Techniques & Dress Construction 04:41 Pleated Dresses: Silhouette & the Female Body 05:26 Madame Grès & Mary McFadden Vintage Dresses 06:29 Fabric, Movement & Fashion Design 08:31 Pleats, Beauty & Fashion History - 📌 The video was created in collaboration with Manhattan’s Babe, a vintage boutique in Kyiv specializing in rare twentieth-century archival fashion pieces.
