So we stripped off the vulc outsole and foxing, added a ~6mm EVA foam midsole, wrapped it in rubber foxing, and glued on a cupsole. Result: it feels great on foot. The extra midsole made a noticeable difference without adding much height or bulk, but the build quality is rough. Rubber doesn't bond well to suede without a sole press, and the off-the-shelf cupsole narrows at the heel. Lesson: this conversion is worth doing, but do it with a proper press, a thicker flat outsole, and one continuous piece of foxing. WHAT WE CHANGED: • Removed the vulcanized foxing tape and outsole (a clear look at vulc vs cupsole construction) • Added a flat-sheet EVA foam midsole (~6mm) • Added rubber foxing in three pieces (toe, heel, side) to keep the high-foxing vulc look • Cemented on an aftermarket cupsole with a flat toe for skating ABOUT THE SHOE: The VM001 Hi from Last Resort AB, the skater-owned brand started by Polar Skate Co. founder Pontus Alv, has a near whole-cut suede upper with minimal seams and minimal branding. It breaks in fast and has great grip and board feel, but it's soft and thin by design.
