As our technological needs advance, so should our clothing. In a world questioning its relationship to fashion, waste and pollution, the avant-garde cannot be only aesthetic. Smart Textiles for Smart Fashion explores energy production in clothing. An emerging technology that has the potential to radically shift the way clothing is designed and worn. Dr. Fatemeh Mokhtari at the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) at Deakin University developed an all-fabric piezoelectric generator. Compact, flexible and mass-manufacturable, the braided generator can be easily integrated into clothing and accessories. In this study, I explore the technology’s potential to inform the design of the clothing with which it is integrated, as not only a functional component, but one that is aesthetic and relevant. This project seeks to propose a higher-performing, and more sustainable, approach to fashion. The world doesn’t need more clothing, it needs better clothing. By working with cutting-edge technologies, we can create fashion for the future. #fashiontech #sustainablefashion #piezoelectric #smartfashion #smarttextiles #smarttextile @DeakinUniversityAustralia
